The 78177-1X is a Thyristor Assembly originally manufactured by Reliance Electric. The part you are replacing may be identified as coming from ABB or Baldor Reliance depending on the year of manufacture. The 78177-1X is a 3 phase, 30/75 horsepower 460 V assembly. Like most thyristor assemblies, the 78177-1X is designed to perform a simple semiconductor function. It is useful in locations where electromechanical devices cannot be used due to limitations in speed or reliability. The 78177-1X is designed as two copper/selenium oxide stacks with a gate that can be triggered via a current across an SCR located between the two stacks. The thyristor will continue to conduct until the voltage is reverse biased or until it is removed. This unit is a fully on or off device and has no option of proportional current.
