78090-61A is a 30 Amp 3-pole Coil Contactor manufactured by Baldor-Reliance. Similar parts may also be sold under Asea Brown Boveri. 78090-61A has since been discontinued by the manufacturer. By definition, an electrically controlled switch that switches an electrical power circuit is a contractor. The power level that controls the contactor is generally at a much lower power level when compared to the switched circuit. This particular component is a rectangular shape with four terminal screws to connect into the machine. This is a 30 Amp contactor furnished with a 3 pole 2 N.O. and 1 N.C. coil. 78090-61A directly connect to high current load devices. Any device that switches more than 15 amps or is part of a circuit that is rated more than a few kw is a contactor. 78090-61A or 7809061A is not intended to interrupt a short circuit current (which is what a circuit breaker is for). Is is, however, perfectly designed to control and suppress the arc produced when interrupting heavy motor currents.
