As a protective feature, if the drive temperature rises above a threshold, the drive automatically shuts down. The automatic shutdown is referred to as an over temperature trip condition. Other trip conditions can also shut down the drive. If too much current enters the drive, an over current condition can automatically shut down the drive. An overload condition occurs when the workload stresses the motor and other moving parts.

To avoid an over temperature condition, you must carefully plan the installation of the drive. The drive must be located in a room with cool air in an environment that is free of oil, dust, and harsh chemicals. Make sure that open space is available on all sides of the drive. This allows air to more freely and carry heat away from the drive. If fans are required to keep the room cool, make sure enough fans are available and that they are in good working condition. In some environments, hoods are installed to draw heat away from a drive and other devices. Make sure the hoods can move the heat away rapidly and that they exhaust the warm air away from the room.
