Product Description

F4-08THM-J is a thermocouple input module developed by Automation Direct for the DirectLogic 405 series; this module is capable of interfacing with DL405 logic controllers and peripheral devices. It connects to external devices, such as a CPU, and converts incoming thermocouple signals into Celsius or Fahrenheit direct temperature readings. Type J inputs are the only type accepted by this module. Type J readings range from -190 to 760°C or -310 to 1400°F. Incoming signals are converted using the 16-bit resolution, resulting in precise and accurate measurements.

All incoming data and calculations are complete and require no extra scaling by the user. These data conversions are based on information from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Measurements provided by F4-08THM-J are kept precise using many integrated system features. Automatic cold junction compensation (CJC) is featured, as are thermocouple linearization and digital filtering. The eight module channels are fault-protected inputs, able to accept ±50 VDC. An external power supply of 18 to 26.4 VDC is required.

Following all installation and storage parameters will preserve the integrity of the module. Though F4-08THM-J can monitor extreme temperatures, it cannot be housed in conditions outside the acceptable range. When in use, ambient temperatures can safely fall between 0°C and 60°C, or 32°F and 140°F. Storage temperatures should also be monitored to fall no lower than -20°C, or -4°F, and raise no higher than 70°C, or 158°F. Refer to the series manual and device datasheet for all installation and wiring instructions.

The F4-08THM-J can be installed into any of the CPU slots; it is wise to examine the confirmation if using a DL430 CPU to ensure that all configurations are correct to work with the F4-08THM-J unit.

Frequently Asked Questions about F4-08THM-J

What are some benefits that the F4-08THM-J provides?

The F4-08THM-J modules provide several benefit types; some of these benefits are diagnostic features which include the detection of disconnect or burnout of the thermocouple, signal processing for automatic cold junction compensation, digital filtering, and thermocouple linearization; this module also provides temperature linearization and calculation based on data provided by the National Institue of Standards and Technology.

Can the F4-08THM-J be used with any DL405 system?

The F4-08THM-J module can be used with any available DL405 system but has some limitations. In expansion and local systems, the limitations are the number of discrete I/O points and available power budget, with remote I/O systems having limitations on the power budget and remote I/O points.

What are the differences between undergrounded and grounded thermocouple assemblies?

The grounded thermocouple assembly on the F4-08THM-J module has a better response time than the ungrounded thermocouple assembly because the thermocouple junction tip is in direct contact with the protective case while the ungrounded thermocouple assembly is isolated from the protective case.

Reviews For F4-08THM-J

Internal Review
(5.0)

While other modules in the DL405 series requires the units to be calibrated, the F4-08THM-J module does not require any, as it calibrates every five seconds. The self-calibration feature is vital to the operation of the module and the attached CPU as it will aid in removing all gain and offset errors. - AX Control Tech
