The 9905-003 is part of the WoodWard SPM-A synchronizer series family. These synchronizer modules are designed with a series of user-adjustable dynamics to match those of the engine. Small and medium sized diesel engines require a fast dynamic unit, while larger devices (larger diesel/gas/gasoline engines and turbomachinery) require a slow dynamic unit. 

The 9905-003 operates by biasing the speed of the offline generator it is attached to, to allow the frequency and phase to match those of another generator in the system. After that, it issues a contact closure signal to close the circuit breaker when they’re matched within the limits before the specified time of match-up. This unit is outfitted with a frequency range of 50 to 60 hertz, with a phase angle of +/- 10 degrees, and a voltage matching capability within 5 percent.
