In a way.  Kind of. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever Googled the phrase \u201cnuclear power plant\u201d and \u201cguitar\u201d together \u2014 and really, who hasn\u2019t \u2014 you\u2019ve probably watched several epic videos of guitarists playing in abandoned cooling towers. You may have even bought some picks off Amazon featuring mushroom clouds or radioactive radiation symbols(for the guitarist who needs nuclear-powered picking.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what you probably didn\u2019t know, even after perusing all of the Google results, is sometimes nuclear power plants and guitars share components. It\u2019s true. Yes, thermal power stations that work by splitting atoms may actually have a small commonality with your guitar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Guitar inside in a Nuclear Cooling Tower\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YQwEQUHymhM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption><em>(thanks to&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCcVm-YS3LmHmXmCqVOb25nQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><em>Dan Phelps<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;for use of his video.)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s your capacitor \u2014 or it might be. Many guitarists prize vintage paper and oil capacitors because they say they give off a brighter, more complex tone that can\u2019t be duplicated with newer capacitor stock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Connected to the tone knob on the guitar\u2019s surface, the capacitor filters frequencies of sound from the pickup to the amplifier, letting high frequencies through but rejecting lower ones.  New Perspectives Music has a great demonstration video of how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7_ZrUjpRAjc\">capacitor filtering<\/a> works if you&#8217;re interested. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nuclear Power Plants and Guitars Share Components<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Paper and oil capacitors have foil-wrapping and come impregnated with oil, although some use wax or epoxy instead of oil.  Sometimes people call them film-based power capacitors. These capacitors showed up in the design of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axcontrol.com\/automation\/ge-boards\/mark-i-ii-ic3600\/IC3600LINB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">early circuit boards<\/a> used in nuclear turbine management systems like GE\u2019s Speedtronic Mark II system. This system has been around since the early 1970s. It&#8217;s still in use in some nuclear plants today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I learned about the dual-use for these capacitors while doing research on the circuit board components for our company website, which often sells the Speedtronic boards. Imagine my surprise when several guitar sites came up instead of the typical datasheets I was used to wading through. It made me laugh to think of my teenager\u2019s guitar as a nuclear device. Although come to think of it \u2014 he takes it that seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So why are these capacitors better than new stock when it comes to your sound? Some say there\u2019s no difference \u2014 it\u2019s all hype. But paper and oil caps won\u2019t pick up sound as ceramic capacitors do, so there\u2019s that. The best thing to do is to do your own research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if you decide to do some epic playing in a cooling tower, let me know.
